Rhythms
In Pre-Kindergarten we count and clap. We are up to counting to 15 using our fingers. I have different flash cards that have either a number on it or a group of pictures and the students tell me how many are on the picture. I usually try one or two listening exercises. They will listen to a short pattern that I clap and tell me how many times I clapped.
Kindergarten will start the year reviewing counting to 100 and they are also starting to learn the note names and do the rhythms below.
First and second grade will learn the following notes and rests. (key: note = name = beat = say)
= quarter note = 1 beat = "ta"
= eighth note = 1/2 beat = "ti"
= 2 eighth notes = 1 beat = "ti ti"
= half note = 2 beats = "to-o"
=dotted half note = 3 beats ="to-o-o"
= whole note = 4 beats = "to-o-o-o"
= quarter rest = 1 beat of silence = "rest"
= eighth rest = 1/2 beat of silence = "rest"
= half rest = 2 beats of silence = "re-est"
= whole rest = 4 beats of silence = "re-e-e-est"
These are some of the rhythms we do in first and second grade.
