Week 1: Aug 25-30
Overview: Our aim this week is for the students to become familiar with the class. I will lay out expectations, rules, and procedures for the class, as well as hand out a list of necessary supplies. There will be a open-binder quiz over classroom procedures. We will also learn some basic greetings: hellos and goodbyes, etc.
Monday
Today I will hand out a welcome letter to parents, a set of rules, a sign sheet to be returned to me by Thursday, and a list of our classroom procedures. Included is the list of supplies needed by Thursday for this class. We will talk about what it means to take Spanish and the expectations for this class.
Homework: Have sign sheets and binders by Thursday for a grade.
Tuesday:
We will fill out information cards in case of emergency, revisit the rules and procedures of class, and do some role-play to reinforce them. We will recite our class creed and I will will review the process where classes earn P.A.T. - preferred activity time. I will give students a short interest survey to fill out that will be returned to me for a homework grade the next day if it is not finished in class. We will close class by playing a game called "Cinco Preguntas"
Wednesday:
We will continue reviewing classroom rules and procedures, and practicing them in class. We will play a "people bingo" game as an icebreaker. We will begin learning Spanish by learning the alphabet and orthography. We will have a quiz over the alphabet orally on Monday.
Thursday:
Binders and sign sheets are due for a grade. We will continue with the alphabet and orthorgraphy packet, and begin learning about Spanish-Speaking countries. We will have a short quiz over classroom rules and procedures.
Friday:
We will continue work from Thursday. Students will receive their media logs which are due at the end of every six weeks.
2nd week: Sept. 2-5
Overview: we will begin the welcome chapter in the textbook, and learn some basic greetings, days, numbers, and seasons.
Monday: Holiday
Tuesday:
We will have an oral quiz over the alphabet. Students will be given their vocabulary sheets for the welcome chapter in the textbook, and will be expected to make flashcards for the words. Flashcards will have the Spanish written on one side, and the English on the other. We will have a quiz next Tuesday over the vocabulary.
Wednesday:
We will explore reasons on why we should study Spanish in the U.S., and I will give some tips on how to be successful in the first year of study. We will review vocabulary using flashcards. We will learn various greetings and goodbyes and practice them out loud. We will do all activities on pages 2 through 5.as well as some large-group practice
Thursday:
We will review greetings and add goodbyes and vocabulary with an activity called heads or tails. We will do activities pages 6 through 8. We will do large group practice. and then the class will partner up and perform a skit for a grade in class.
Friday
: We will begin learning numbers 1-30 and the seasons of the year. and there will be a worksheet that may become homework. We will play a review game called around the world. We will take notes on question words in Spanish. We will have a quiz over vocabulary on Monday.
Week 3: Sept 8-12
Monday:
We will have a quiz over the preliminary chapter of the book. We will watch a short video in Spanish that uses many of the vocabulary words that will be taught in this chapter and gives the students a brief glimpse into the culture of Buenos Aires, Mexico City, and Madrid. Students will receive the vocabulary for this chapter and their homework will be to create flashcards for numbers 1-33.
Tuesday:
We will practice vocabulary pronunciation. I will teach the pronouns in Spanish and the students will take notes We will. Read the vocab on p. 14-15 and translate the sentences as a class. Everyone will stand up and act out a vocab word. I will assign a small crossword puzzle as in-class work or homework if it isn't completed.
Wednesday:
We will have vocab practice. I will lecture on how to answer questions in Spanish, and we will the exercises on page 16. I will pass out workbooks to the students.
Thursday:
We will do the activities on pages 17. We will read pages 18 and 19 and play a dice game using numbers 1-30.
Friday:
We will do exercises on pages 20 and 21 in the book, and have a quiz over vocabulary 1-33.
Week 4: Sept. 15-19
Overview: We will finish chapter 1 - learning how to describe people in Spanish
Monday
Monday we will begin the second half of chapter 1. We will practice vocabulary. We wil learn how to conjugate the verb SER and it’s uses. We will do exercises on pages 18-20 in the textbook
Tuesday
We will practice vocabulary and there will be a review of the verb SER. I will teach students the definite and indefinite articles in Spanish and we will work with pages 21 and 22 in the text.
We will practice vocabulary. We will watch a video recap of SER, Spanish pronouns, and the articles. We will work with pages 23 and 24.
We will practice vocabulary and work will pages 25-27 in the textbook. We will do some listening activities in the workbook.
Friday
We will practice vocabulary then work on a pronunciation activity. We will do some basic translation exercises and then page 30-31 in the textbook
There will be an exam on Tuesday!
5th week outline – Sept. 22-26
Overview: This week we will test chapter 1 and begin working on Chapter 2. In this chapter we will learn numbers through 100, the plural forms of the verb SER, the plural forms of the articles, gender/number agreement between adjectives and nouns, and vocabulary associated with school subjects.
Monday:
We will review for the chapter exam by reading a conversation and answering questions about what we have read, then doing a similar exercise with a more difficult written passage. Afterwards we will take a practice exam and then I will give a powerpoint presentation that sums up the chapter and all we’ve done these last 2 weeks.
Tuesday:
We will take our exam and work on vocabulary for the new chapter. Flashcards for chapter 2 will be assigned as homework. I will remind students that their media logs are due soon.
Wednesday:
We will watch the opening video for the chapter. We will begin practicing our new vocabulary and how it is used both through an in-class activity and by reviewing pages 44 and 45. We will do the exercises on page 46 out loud and written as well.
Thursday:
We will review vocabulary either by a bingo game, a fly-swatter game, or another review activity. We will do exercises page 47, then review vocabulary for classes and numbers 30-100. We will play a dice game to work on numbers.
Friday:
We will review vocabulary with the “around-the-world” game, and then watch a video on traveling in Peru.
6th week outline – Sept. 29 – Oct. 3
Monday:
We will review vocab 1-25. We will do the exercises on page 50 and review them in class, and finish up with workbook pages 11-12, which will be homework if they are unfinished.
Tuesday:
We will warmup using exercise 6 on page 50. We will review vocabulary 1-25 with a heads or tails and take a quiz over this same vocabulary. We will do exercises 7 and 8 on page 50 and play a numbers guessing game on page 51.
Wednesday:
We will review numbers using heads or tails. We will do some counting exercises as chains to count to 100 by 2’s, 5, and backwards by 10’s. We will take our quiz on numbers 1-100 and then do the exercises on page 52 in the book.
Thursday:
Students will practice vocab for 10 minutes either in pairs or through around the world. Students will re-read page 52 and do all exercises on page 53 in their daily work. Afterwards they will do pages 13-15 in their workbooks. Anything unfinished is homework.
Friday:
This is the last day of the 6 weeks. Students will turn in their media logs, which are weighted as a test. They will then practice vocabulary for 10 minutes in pairs or as a group. 3 students will read page 54 out loud to the class. 2 students will act out the conversation on page 55. Students will do the activities on pages 55 and 56. the last 15 minutes of class we will pair up into groups of 4 and do activity 20 page 57. Homework is a 2 page packet on the verb SER.
