Outcomes:  The purpose of this course is to help students further develop and refine skills in analytical reading, expository writing, oral presentation, and investigative methods of research.  Evocative literary works, current events and argumentation essays are studied as well.

Through observing, reading, discussing, thinking, writing, and reflecting, the learner has an opportunity to further develop an understanding of humanity and his/her skills in studying appropriate fiction and non-fiction selections.

Specific Tasks: The student will be required to understand basic literary terms.  The student will also be required to excel in the area of vocabulary.  We will write some in this class, but our main focus will be in the area of reading and understanding and applying the literary terms we will come across.

Assessments:  With each major assignment (i.e. essays, projects, etc.), the student will receive a grading rubric.  The student must keep up with this rubric because he/she will not receive another one.  Rubrics will be turned in with the assignment so make sure the student keeps up with his/her rubrics.

Each six weeks, the student will receive a minimum of twelve to fourteen grades.  At least ten of these grades will be daily or quiz grades and the others will be tests, projects, or essaysAll quizzes will count twice.

Late Work Policy:  If an assignment is late, the student will receive points off for the late assignment.  How many points are taken off is the teacher’s discretion.

Make-up Work:  When a student is absent, he/she is responsible to get any work he/she has missed.  All assignments will be listed on a sticky note on the appropriate calendar by the door.  Any worksheets or handouts may be retrieved from the manila folders by the calendar.  On occasions I will remember to tell the student, but like I said previously, the student is responsible for all missed assignments.

Grading Policy:                Major Grades—60%

                                                      Daily/Quiz Grades—40%
