READING HOMEWORK

The most important thing a child can learn in school is to read and comprehend what they have read.  In order to do this consider reading like a sport.  You must practice every day or you will not get better at the sport, so it is with reading.  To read better, a student must practice at school and at home.  To facilitate practice at home, I encourage use of the Accelerated Reader Program.  Your child should have an AR book with them at all times.  Please take a few minutes each night (15 or 20) to read to or with your child.  It's Okay to read the book more than once.  You practice football, basketball, baseball, and cheerleading moves more than once.

To help your child decide if the book is too hard for them use the "5 finger rule".  If a child misses 5 or more words on a page then the book is probably too hard for them to read independently.  Go ahead and read the book to them and encourage them to get an easier book the next time.

Daily Homework: Please read to or with your child for 15 or 20 minutes each night.  Everyone in the family will benefit from this time spent together.
