A letter from the Superintendent
Posted 02/22/2018 09:50PM

Dear Godley ISD Families,

Like you, I watched with sadness and horror as another tragic incident of school violence unfolded in Florida. I watched these events as both an educator and as a parent of two children enrolled at Godley ISD, and I struggled with the appropriateness of reaching out to you. But as we received feedback that student and parent anxiety was climbing due to some social media posts about GHS, I thought it best to take a moment and address concerns. Let me start by assuring you, as the superintendent of Godley ISD, student safety is always our primary concern.

Earlier this week, some posts on social media with inaccurate and incomplete information started a snowball of misinformation. In a proactive attempt to ease concerns, we posted to our website and emailed a message to High School parents explaining as much as we could about the situation, stressing there was no threat. Extra resource officers were also in attendance today as a proactive and visual reminder that safety is always our top priority at Godley ISD. Unfortunately, we continued to receive concerned phone calls and sensed uneasiness on the High School campus. After meeting with the High School student leadership team, our High School principal, Mr. Karnes, held a campus-wide meeting with the entire student body and High School staff. He informed them there is not, and never was, a threat to student safety at Godley High School, and assured our students and staff that our top priority is the safety and well-being of our Godley family. This is a responsibility we take very seriously.

Understandably, in the wake of the events in Florida, there is a heightened concern for school safety, which is why we encourage anyone to report any suspicious activity or any behavior that causes concern. We strongly encourage all students, staff, and parents to continue to communicate with school officials. Help us remind students that they have an obligation to bring information about situations that cause them concern to adults at the school so we can respond quickly and appropriately to protect their safety.

I also want to assure you we have proactive plans and procedures in place to provide a safe learning environment for our students. We work closely with area law enforcement to continuously review, evaluate and strengthen safety and security at our schools. Our Administrative Leadership team started an internal safety review after the grass fires in Parker County, and we are already preparing recommendations for improvement.

I also want to say thank you to all of you who called and emailed with support and encouragement. I was overwhelmed by the willingness and ease that our parents and community offered support, ideas, and understanding during this short, but anxious, episode at GHS. I am energized by the level of participation offered by many who communicated with me.

Those of you who know me, know that I am, intentionally and by nature, a very positive person. So I don’t see this week’s events as a problem or a challenge; I see an opportunity. I see an opportunity for our great community to come together and become even more engaged and supportive of our students and school district. I see an opportunity to improve communication, build connections, and create meaningful learning opportunities to benefit our students. I see an opportunity for our students to thrive from the synergy of collaboration of a caring school community that supports the shared mission, vision and values of the school district.

Going forward, I trust that our amazing faculty, staff, student body, and community, will work together to ensure a safe, dynamic, and innovative learning environment for our most precious assets: our students.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact any member of the Godley ISD administrative team. Thank you for helping us keep our schools a safe place for all.
